There are some important changes coming to water polo we wanted to share with you as the 2015 season gets underway.

Zone Board

As most have heard, we had an issue at the recent Zone Board elections where the Zone used an outdated procedure and the election was therefore nullified. We apologize for this oversight. USAWP is currently running the election on line and nominations for Zone Board members closes on February 25, 2015. Voting will begin on March 23 and close on March 31.

Annual Plan

The Zone has completed ( its annual plan which is posted at the Zone website. The Annual Plan presents the goals the Zone has set out for the year along with the plan to achieve those goals. We encourage you to review the plan to understand the activities for the year but also to gain your input and ideas for the future.

Zone Deadline

The Zone has created a deadlines section on the Zone website to make it clear to our members the various deadlines for entries into Zone and National events. One deadline quickly approaching is our deadline to submit bids to host Zone Events including JO Qualifiers, the TYR Cup Qualifier and the SPA League. All bids for all events are due the first Monday of March, which in 2015 is March 2, 2015. The Bid Document is posted at the Zone Website.

Rule Change

At the recent USAWP Delegate meeting held in Los Angeles in January, some important changes were discussed and will be implemented.  We wanted to share some of these with you now and, more information will follow.

New rules for 10U and 12U

As of 1.19.15, USAWP has adopted the following rules for our youngest athletes: Goal size outlined in rule modifications was implemented for 10U athletes in 2014 and 10U athletes played in smaller goals at JOs 2014, smaller goals will be used for this age group in JOs 2015.

JO Changes

Junior Olympics will be in Orange County this summer. Some changes are being made to the Conduct of Championships, the document that governs the conduct of Junior Olympics and our other national championships:

·      Roster Swaps: A trial program was conducted last summer where teams that qualified both an A and a B team could move two players between the two rosters. The intent was to allow clubs to motivate the top players on the B team to try and earn a spot while keep the players on the A team hungry. It was not to stack a B team for qualifications. Due to some abuse that occurred, this trial rule will not continue

Affiliation: Affiliation for National Junior Olympics has been modified as follows- Once an athlete is rostered for a Zone Qualification Tournament, the athlete's club affiliation has been declared and is locked. Should an athlete not appear on a Zone Qualification Roster, club affiliation must be declared by July 1st of the year in which the Championship Finals are held.

Coach Education

SafeSport is a coach member requirement as of 1.1.15. Beginning 3.1.15 coaches who have not completed the 90 minute course will not be eligible to be rostered for USAWP sanctioned events.

Zone Sanctions and Calendar

We encourage all of our hosts to complete their sanction requests into the Zone for the year so we can update our annual calendar.

Zone Sportsmanship and Leadership Council

The SOPAC zone will be looking to offer some team activities dedicated to sportsmanship and skill. The vision is a day comprised of character education, team bonding, and dialogue dedicated to many dimensions of sport. It is in the preliminary stages of composition; more to follow.

Open Play Opportunities

One of the goals that the Zone has set for 2015 is to increase the opportunity for mens and womens open play. The Zone will be working with our clubs that offer open play opportunities to implement leagues and zone sponsored tournaments.
